About Us
SurSafe Mutual Insurance Company, formerly known as BMI Company, Inc., has proudly served individuals, families, and businesses with trusted insurance protection since 1891. Our roots trace back to Billings, Missouri, where we began as Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Christian County MO, founded by a group of German-American farmers who recognized the importance of safeguarding their neighbors’ property and livelihoods.
A Legacy of Service and Strength
From our humble beginnings—writing fire insurance policies in German and operating out of a policyholder’s home—we’ve grown into a dynamic mutual insurance provider. By 1904, we had over 1,700 policyholders and more than $2.2 million in fire insurance in force. Our commitment to community and mutual values led us to join the Missouri Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (MAMIC) in 1901 and the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) in 1921. At this time, the company changed it's name to The Farmers Mutual Insurance Company.
In 1972, we became Billings Farmers Mutual Insurance Company, expanding our authority to underwrite insurance across all Missouri counties. By 1993, we adopted the name Billings Mutual Insurance Company, and in 2017, we became BMI Company, Inc., reflecting our broader scope and modernized operations.
Over the years, we’ve merged with 10 other Missouri mutual companies, expanded our headquarters, and in 2015, became the first Missouri mutual under Chapter 380 to underwrite automobile insurance under our own name.
A New Chapter: SurSafe Mutual Insurance Company
On July 1, 2025, we proudly entered a new era with the acquisition of Cameron National Insurance Company, a Missouri stock insurance company licensed in six states: Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Kansas, and Arkansas. This strategic acquisition marks our transformation into SurSafe Mutual Insurance Company, with Cameron National now operating as SurSafe Insurance Company.
This expansion allows us to extend our trusted protection beyond Missouri, bringing our values of integrity, service, and innovation to new communities across the Midwest.
